Wyboston Lakes Resort is the largest, independently-owned business and leisure destination in Northern Europe. Situated in 380 acres of Bedfordshire countryside, it includes a four-star hotel and two purpose-built venues for conferences and training events, as well as a spa, restaurants and golf course.
Its two specialist venues, The Woodlands Event Centre and The Willows Training Centre, offer a complete spectrum of options in terms of facility, space, style and budget. The Centres together provide a total of 54 conference, training and syndicate rooms – – and more than 400 bedrooms.
In the last few years Wyboston Lakes Resort has spent a total of over £10m on its properties as both venues have been completely transformed to meet the needs and expectations of the latest and future generations of event planners and delegates.
The Woodlands Event Centre
The Woodlands Event Centre is purpose built, flexible in layout and ideal for larger bespoke events. With hosted service, creative flair, and ample space inside and out it is truly an experience led venue.
The recent investment included creating the Rosewood Suite, a main conference room which has a capacity for over 600 delegates seated theatre style, and many more inspirational meeting areas designed with creative flair, all equipped with the latest in internet, IT and AV technology and customisable lighting.
As part of a continuing commitment to provide contemporary food and beverage for delegates, high street retailer Paddy & Scott’s provides high street quality coffee for the resort, across its spa, restaurants, and events spaces. The fuelling station at The Woodlands Event Centre also offers a wide range of drinks and snacks.
An adjacent outdoor terrace, along with additional external courtyards, provides BBQ and al fresco options during summer months. The Olive Restaurant can comfortably seat up to 280 people, while private dinner events can be booked for up to 50 guests.
The nearby Cedar Bar provides an informal area for guests to network, chat and do business.
The Willows Training Centre
The Willows Training Centre is a fun and encouraging place to be. This flexible training space is designed with learning in mind, for a consistent training experience. Offering self-service options and freedom to relax and for the end of the day a cool games loft to let off steam.
During 2020 this venue underwent significant further investment creating a sophisticated new boardroom for up to 24 delegates – The Park; a new creative space designed like a London tube station – Willows Parkway; 12 upgraded meeting rooms and the creation of new dining and social spaces are all among the many new features of recently refurbished Willows Training Centre. The Cricket Kitchen, a self-service buffet restaurant and a Paddy & Scott’s Pit Stop provides top class beverage in attractive spaces, while the public areas, bar, restaurant and many of the venue’s 183 en-suite bedrooms have also been upgraded.
Wyboston Lakes Resort’s has won many top awards for its venues over the years. Most recently, the creativity and design work on The Woodlands Event Centre was rewarded when it was voted Best Conference Venue for 450 to 1100 people theatre style at the prestigious Conference Awards 2020.
It also reinforced its status as a leading UK conference venue by winning the award for Best Mid-Sized Meeting Space at the hospitality industry’s CHS Awards.
Outdoor team building
The acres of open space and lakes are great places for outdoor team building activities and events. Wyboston Lakes Resort and its partner Ride Leisure, the water sports and land activity centre based at the resort, offer an extensive range of activities including wakeboarding, stand-up paddle boarding and jet skiing. Land-based adventures include a 4X4 off-road driving experience and an inflatable ‘It’s a Knockout’-style obstacle course.
Covid Safety accreditation
After introducing its thorough Safe Events protocols, Wyboston Lakes Resort has been recognised by three prestigious organisations for its first-class event facilities and commitment to health, hygiene and safety standards, which have become paramount following Covid-19.
It was the first venue to receive the new AIM Secure Accreditation from the Meetings Industry Association (MIA), then one of the first in the UK to secure the ‘Safe, Clean and Legal’ accreditation from Quality in Tourism. As its third badge of approval, it has also been approved by the AA COVID-19 Confident accreditation scheme.
The Resort hosted a mock gala dinner as one of the pilot events created by the government to test the COVID-Secure guidelines that all venues must follow.
Working with the Meetings Industry Association (mia), the dinner for 120 people at the Woodlands Event Centre was observed by officials from Public Health England. It was later acclaimed a success, a powerful endorsement of the venue’s Covid safety standards and procedures.
Wyboston Lakes Resort is committed to continually increasing the sustainability of the site. It has two gold sustainability accolades from the Green Tourism Awards, and the International Association of Conference Centres. Whilst platinum has been awarded by Greengage.
By working with The Energy Check, the resort has implemented a series of energy-saving initiatives that have substantially reduced energy consumption. The resort is now using 100% renewable electricity, which has helped to reduce its carbon footprint by over 60%. Projects are also underway to also remove all fossil fuel from the site. There is now a total of 26 electric car charger points on the site.
Committed to waste management, the resort is ‘Zero to Landfill’ for the sixth consecutive year.
Single-use plastics have been a big focus and, by taking part in the Meetings Industry Association’s #20percentless scheme, they were cut back by 42% by the end of 2020 on a like for like basis.
